His family is a family of famous poets and politicians. His grandfather and father were famous local poets. His father's uncle, ÃÆ'lvaro de Albornoz y Liminiana, was minister of the Justice Department of the government of the Republic of Spain until the Civil War. Finally, he became president of the government of the Spanish Republic in exile in Paris and Mexico replaced by Franco dictatorship. Concha de Albornoz, daughter of Albornoz y Liminiana, is a scholar and teacher who is considered the frontline of the modern Spanish feminist literary movement. In 1959, his uncle, Severo Ochoa de Albornoz (who fled Spain with a Republican passport) while living and working in the United States, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine with Arthur Kornberg to interpret the RNA.

His family has been involved in business in Puerto Rico since the 1890s. In 1944, 18-year-old Albornoz moved with the de Albornoz family to San Juan. There he began his formal academic education which resulted in an MA from the University of Puerto Rico. At the time, he was studying under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Andalucian, Juan RamÃÆ'³n JimÃÆ'Â © nez.

In August 1950, de Albornoz married Jorge Enjuto Bernal, from Andalusia, in Puerto Rico. Like de Albornoz, Enjuto Bernal comes from a Republican family who live outside of Spain. His father, Federico Enjuto FerrÃÆ'¡n, was a Republican court judge who was involved in the trial of General JosÃÆ'Â © Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of Falange, a fascist party in Spain. After living together in Puerto Rico and for a short time in Kansas and Paris, the marriage was dissolved in 1967.

Careers

Also at this time he began to teach. In 1955, he was awarded a scholarship to study comparative literature at the Sorbonne in Paris.

From 1955 to 1957, de Albornoz returned to Europe to continue his studies in Paris with José BergamÃÆ'n, a renowned Spanish poet and critic who lived in exile. He then went on to Spain, to complete his doctorate at the University of Salamanca. De Albornoz's scientific work is performed almost exclusively for Spanish escritores exiliados.

Among other publications, in 1961, de Albornoz was published, in Puerto Rico, the compilation of the poisoned poem Antonio Machado is not allowed to be published in Franco Spain. (Machado himself had died in exile in 1939 in Collioure, France).

After receiving his degree in 1966, he returned to Puerto Rico to become a professor at the University of Puerto Rico.

Around 1968, de Albornoz returned to Madrid where he taught at the Universidad AutÃÆ'³noma (Department of Humanities) and at the University of New York in Spain. In addition to being a professor and poet, Albornoz is now a renowned scholar. As already stated, his interest is naturally expanded into the work of exiled Spanish poets such as JosÃÆ'Ã… © BergamÃÆ'n in Paris, Rafael Alberti in Argentina, and LeÃÆ'³n Felipe and Juan Rejano in Mexico.

He is a permanent member of the jury for the Antonio Machado International Prize awarded annually in Collioure, France.
