iPhone 5C (marketed in lower case 'c' as iPhoneÃ, 5c ) is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. This device is part of the iPhone series and was unveiled on September 10, 2013, and released on September 20, 2013, along with top-class partner, iPhone 5S. " c " in the phone name means "color".
The iPhone 5C is a variant of the iPhone 5, with a similar hardware specification but a hard-coated polycarbonate shell instead of aluminum from the original iPhone 5. The iPhone 5C is available in several color options, and shipped with iOS 7. The iPhone 5C is sold at a discounted price point compared to 5S: unlike previous Apple practices that lowered the price of previous models after the release of the new version, iPhone 5 was explicitly discontinued and replaced by 5C. On September 9, 2014, the iPhone 5C 16 and 32GB models were replaced with the 8GB model with the announcement of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. On September 9th, 2015, the 8GB version was discontinued when iPhone 6S was announced.

Design
The 5C iPhone has been redesigned using polycarbonate housing, which is reinforced by steel tape. However, due to the design change materials, the phone weighs 132 grams, which is 20 grams heavier than both 5 and 5S, but is still lighter than the older iPhone models. The design of the 5C iPhone is also much thicker but very similar to the design of the iPod Touch model (5th generation), which is also available in different colors, but in different coating layers. Other minor changes include different camera assembly and switch mute/ringer design. This iPhone received positive reviews because its design claims that it is the most durable iPhone ever. Unlike the next models, the iPhone 5C is offered in five colors (blue, green, yellow, pink and white).

The interlock control element consists of sliders, switches, and buttons. Jony Ive, the designer of the new iOS 7 element, described the update as "bringing order to complexity", highlighting features such as fine typography, new icons, translucent, layering, physics , and parallax-controlled gyroscopes as some major changes to the design. The designs of both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks (version 10.9) strikingly depart from skeuomorphic elements such as the green shades of Game Center, wood on the Kiosk, and Calendar skins, which support a flatter graphic design.
The phone can act as a hotspot, share its Internet connection via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, and also access the App Store, an online application distribution platform for iOS developed and maintained by Apple. This service allows users to browse and download apps from the iTunes Store developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and published through Apple.
iOS 7 adds AirDrop, Wi-Fi ad-hoc sharing platform. Users can share files with iPhone 5 and beyond, iPod Touch (5th generation), iPad (4th generation), or iPad Mini. The operating system also added Control Center, which gives iOS users access to commonly used controls and applications. The iPhone 5C functionality as a media player, and includes Apple Maps and Passbook. The mapping app includes turn-by-turn navigation, 3D viewing in several major cities and real-time traffic. Users can rotate the device horizontally to landscape mode to access album cover collage.
5C includes Siri, a smart personal assistant and knowledge navigator. This app uses natural language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of Web services. Apple claims that the software adapt to individual user preferences over time and personalize results. iOS 7 adds new male and female voices, new system setup functions, redesigns to customize the rest of the operating system, and integration with Twitter, Wikipedia, Bing, and Photos. The highest operating system currently supported is iOS 10 by 2016. iOS 11 will not support this iPhone, because the phone stopped production in September 2015 and is also a 32-bit iPhone.
Facebook comes integrated through the original Apple app. Facebook features can be accessed directly from within native apps such as Calendar that can sync Facebook events, or use buttons like Facebook from within the Apple App Store. iTunes Radio, an internet radio service, is also included in iPhoneÃ, 5C. This is a free, ad-supported service available to all iTunes users, featuring Siri integration on iOS. Users can skip tracks, customize stations, and purchase track stations from the iTunes Store. Users can also search through their history from the previous song.
Hardware
The 5C iPhone uses most of the same hardware as the iPhone 5, with some minor changes.
The iPhone 5C uses a system on a chip (SoC), called Apple A6, the same chip that supports iPhone 5. The SoC consists of a 1.3GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB RAM and TriXTX PowerVR SGX543MP3 running at 266 MHz.
The iPhone 5C has a new LTE antenna that now includes more LTE bands than any other smartphone according to Apple. This tool is made of a hard polycarbonate body coated unibody with a reinforced steel frame, which also functions as an antenna. The 5C iPhone is available in several bright colors for the back - blue, green, pink, yellow, and white, with a black glass front. It features a 4-inch Retina, multi-touch screen, which has a resolution of 640ÃÆ'-1136 pixels. Storage capacity is available at 8, 16, or 32Ã, GB; memory card plug-in is not supported.
The iPhone 5C retains an 8 MP rear camera similar to the iPhone 5 but with a different camera assembly. The front camera, accessible via FaceTime and the camera app has a lower resolution, at 1.2 megapixels. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a 1510mAh capacity is slightly increased on the iPhone 5's 1440mAh battery. It is integrated and can not be replaced by the user. During the iPhone media event, Apple announced the case for the iPhone 5C which is available in six colors: black, white, pink, yellow, blue, and green. The hole is cut from the casing to show the iPhone's back color through the casing, making the device look almost two tones. The casing and color of the phone produce thirty different color combinations. The inside of the casing is coated with a soft microfiber, with the exterior made of silicone. This is the first time Apple has released a case for the iPhone since the iPhone 4 with iPhone 4 Bumper. The iPhone 5C is the only iPhone that is newer than the iPhone 5 that does not fit Apple Leather Case.
Apple also released the previously announced dock for the iPhone 5C, the first time Apple has made a dock since the iPhone 4. The dock has received a very negative review at Apple's online store because of its incompatibility with the phone case.

Critical reception
The iPhoneÃ, 5C received generally mixed reviews, with the phone itself being considered a solid, but polycarbonate shell considered a downgrade that lacks a 'premium' look and feel, compared to the aluminum body of iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S.
Most reviewers generally note that the iPhone 5S offers more features (thanks to the 64-bit A7 SoC with the M7 motion co-processor) and storage space for a relatively small additional surcharge ($ 650 USD versus $ 550 USD in March 2014) over the iPhone 5C, during the second period the phone sold side by side. The 8 GB version of the iPhone 5C, released in 2014, is described as "unusable" because only 4.9GB is available to users after installing iOS 8; In contrast to the iPhone, 5S that offers at least 16 GB of storage. The 5C iPhone is considered too expensive to compete with affordable leading smartphones like the Nexus 5 and OnePlus One, or smartphones designed for emerging markets like Moto G.
Commercial revenue
The iPhone 5S and 5C sold more than nine million units in the first three days, setting a record for smartphone sales for the first weekend, with 5S selling three times more units than the iPhone 5C. After the first day of release, 1% of all iPhone in the US is iPhone 5S, while 0.3% is iPhone 5C.
Commentators see the iPhone 5C as a failure because supply chain cuts signal a decrease in demand in October 2013. Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledges that the company is oversupplying the 5C iPhone while the iPhone 5S shortage, as a result of failure to anticipate the sales ratio between the two phones. Six months after the release of the iPhone 5C, on March 25, 2014, Apple announced that sales of iPhone channels had surpassed 500 million units, but failed to solve how many of these units were the iPhone 5C. iPhone 5C was among the top three best-selling phones in the US for three months after its release.
