Affiliates are celebrated on a function in which former President Gerald Ford joins more than 2,500 guests at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts Great Hall. Ford marked an affiliation between Michigan State University and the Detroit College of Law "a bold new venture" that presents "a single opportunity to help shape the changing face of American law education into the next century."
The relationship between the University and the College has led to a comprehensive interdisciplinary law education program in law college. Today, universities remain one of only two independent law schools affiliated with research universities.
In April 2004, the school changed its name to MSU College of Law, becoming closer academically with MSU. Although it operates as a university's university constituency, the legal college remains financially independent and does not accept state or university funding.
Joan Howarth began her work at Michigan State University College of Law on July 1, 2008. Howarth is the 11th dean and first female dean in the history of 117 years of MSU Law history. Previously, he was a professor at William S. Boyd Law School at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, since 2001. He retired at the end of the school year 2015-16. Lawrence Ponoroff became Dean in autumn 2016.
College is nationally ranked in the Best Law School in US. News and World Report , currently sitting in 88th place. The Michigan State Law Review is ranked 48 out of 317 by Washington & amp; Lee University School of Law, which is the main source for legal journal ranking.

LegalRnD
The school is also currently the Legal Innovation Service Center - LegalRnD for the short term. LegalRnD was introduced in 2015. Its directors are Assistant Current School Deans for Career Development and former Honigman partner Miller Schwartz and Cohn Daniel W. Linna Jr. The program enables students to take innovation-oriented classes and technologies, such as Legal Analysis, Entrepreneurship Lawyering, and E-Discovery. The goal is that after students follow this program, they will be better equipped to find innovative ways to provide legal services to clients and those in need.
LegalRnD is likely to replace the previous ReInvent Law program, established by former schools of Daniel Martin Katz and Renee Newman Knake today. ReInvent Law probably ceased operations when Daniel Martin Katz obtained a new job at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. A popular piece of legal technology evolving from ReInvent's legal program is the StandIn phone app, partly founded by Andrew Johnston's graduate school.
Currently, the program is a distinguishing aspect when comparing Michigan State University College of Law with other law schools. In the short time it has been there, he has partnered with Michigan-based intellectual property firm Brooks Kushman to find innovative ways to provide legal services to beginners and entrepreneurs; and has partnered with MaRS Canada. LegalRnD also helps to launch the ZeekBeek directory for law students with the goal of becoming more open to law students before graduation. The program even caught the attention of legal blogger Kevin O'Keefe.
