PxTone Collage ( ????????? (Japanese) ) is freeware music editing program. This program is being developed by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. Currently in beta development phase, since 2006.

The format is similar to MIDI files in many ways. The striking differences include the instrument sample ("sound") stored in the song data itself.

The program is also capable of opening other sample formats developed by Pixel (ptnoise, ptvoice) as well as some of the more popular sample formats, such as.wav and.ogg. The main interface of the program is the piano roll display that is used to place the record and determine the duration, volume, panning, sample, and pitch. Song tempo can be set, but can not be changed during playback. The.pxtone format also allows storage of some additional information, such as song comments and song names.

Together with Pxtone Collage includes several programs for creating instrument samples (ptnoise and ptvoice formats) and small player apps. Includes DLL files and headers for programming with PxTone.

History

In 1998, Pixel released a small music writing and playback app known as PiyoPiyo. This format has three melody tracks with adjustable wave samples, and a fourth track dedicated exclusively to drum samples. The editor interface uses piano scrolls that will become standard in all future Pixel music editors. A considerable defect with PiyoPiyo's design is the playback associated with CPU usage, because a heavily taxed CPU will cause the playback to slow down.

Some time later, Pixel developed the Organya format for use in the Indie Story Cave game. This format is very similar to PiyoPiyo, with the main difference supporting up to 8 melody tracks and 8 drum tracks for 16 simultaneous voices. Instead of having an editable waveform specification, the Organya uses built-in libraries of 100 "instrument" waves to choose from. Pxtone was developed as the successor to the Organya.
