The University of the Incarnate Word ( UIW ) is a private Catholic university whose main campus is located in San Antonio and Alamo Heights, Texas, United States. Founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the university's main campus is located at 154 acres (0.6 km 2 ).

The university operates a women's secondary school, Words High School, Vocational High School, and Higher Education High School, St. Anthony Catholic. He also operates two elementary schools, St. Anthony's and St. Peter Prince of the Apostles, through the Brainpower Connection program.

History

The school was founded by the Sisters of Charity from the Incarnation Word, who came to San Antonio in 1869 to help treat the cholera outbreak. It began as the Incarnate Word of God in 1881 and was initially hired as a college for women. In 1900, the Incarnation Word Academy, first established in the San Antonio area called Government Hill, was transferred to the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity from the Incarnation Word at Alamo Heights. The college classes were added to the curriculum in 1909, and the name of the institution was changed to the Academy and Academy of the Incarnation Word.

In 1995, the university was selected to move to new population areas, both in the adult education community and the international arena. In 1995, the Adult Degree Settlement Program (ADCaP) gave adult students the opportunity to obtain post-secondary education in the afternoon at an accelerated pace.

Accreditation

In 1998, the University re-accredited at baccalaureate level and a master's degree and approval was awarded to offer doctoral degrees by the Southern College Association and School Commissions at the College. Through the College of Professional Studies, universities are nationally accredited by the Association of Business Schools and Collegiate Programs to offer degrees in Business Administration (BBA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Other accreditations include the American Music Therapy Association, the Texas Education Agency, the Collegiate Nursing Education Commission, the Board of Nurse Tester for the State of Texas, the Accreditation Commission for Athletic Training Education, the Joint Studies Committee on the Nuclear Medicine Education Program, and the American Dietetic Association.

The University also has membership at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the National Association of Colleges and Independent Universities, the Council for the Enhancement of Education Support, the Independent Colleges and the University of Texas, the San Antonio Board of Higher Education and the American College of San Antonio. The Institute is a charter member of the Association of Hispanic Colleges and Universities and qualifies as a Hispanic-serving (HSI) institution under federal guidelines.

School

All students are required to volunteer 45 hours in the community before graduation.

Campus

The university's main campus is located in the Midtown Brackenridge San Antonio district and the Alamo Heights enclave. Satellite campuses are located in northwest San Antonio at South Texas Medical Center; Zengcheng, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China (China Incarnate Word/CIW); Mexico City, Mexico (Centro Universitario Incarnate Word); Irapuato, Mexico (Centro Universitario Incarnate Word Campus Bajio) and Heidelberg, Germany (Center for European Studies). Word Incarnation also maintains the Adult Degree Settlement Program at Rolling Oaks Mall in northeast San Antonio and Saidoff Center in northwest San Antonio.

The newly constructed building includes the pharmacy school and the "Hillside" dormitory, opened in the fall of 2007. The home and stadium of Tom Benson, Hillside II hostel (later renamed Joeris) and the parking garage of the new Ancira Tower are opened and dedicated in the fall. 2008. Police Department

The school has a police department with 17 officers. In December 2013, a university police shot and killed a student in nearby Alamo Heights during a traffic stop. A year later, Corporal Carter resigned from the department. In March 2015, the Grand Bexar County jury decided not to indict Carter for the shootings.

Athletics

In August 2012, UIW accepted an invitation to move up to Division I as a member of the Southland Conference. UIW entered the NCAA Division I Southland Conference on July 1, 2013. The football team plays as an independent FCS Division I in 2013 and began playing the conference in 2014 due to schedule commitments. UIW will be fully qualified for the Division I championship which starts in the 2017-18 season. Prior to moving to Division I, UIW was a member of the Lone Star Conference II Division.

In 2010, the Men's UIW Swim Team was second in the NCAA II Division National Championships in Canton, Ohio.

The pool team synced with UIW was placed at the 2006 US Universities Championship.

UIW Men's and Women's Soccer teams have won many Heartland Conference championships.

UIW Cross Country Men won the Heartland Conference meeting in 2008 and 2009.
