The Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education ( LNIPE ) (formerly Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education and Lakshmibai College of Physical Education, Gwalior) is a university sponsored by the Government of India, under the Ministry Youth and Sports Affairs, dedicated to promoting excellence in sports and physical education in the country. The campus is located at Agra - Mumbai National Highway in Shaktinagar, Gwalior in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education began its life in 1957, in the form of Lakshmibai Physical Education College (LCPE), to commemorate Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, as a physical education college, affiliated with Vikram University, Ujjain. In 1964, the university was transferred to Jiwaji University.
In 1973, the college changed its name to Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) and nine years later, in 1982, upgraded as an autonomous college. The next name change took place in 1995, to the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education . In 2000, the current name of the Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education was accepted when declared, by the Government of India, as a university deemed to be handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs, which funded all its activities. In 2017, it was renamed to Physical Education Institute Lakshmibai after UGC's order not to use the word "University" in the name of the university considered.
The main purpose of this institute is addressed
- development of qualified physical education teachers;
- assist institutes and other sports-based organizations in India through academic and professional guidance;
- promotion of sports and physical education programs nationwide;
- and performance as a center of excellence in the field of physical education and sports.
It also aims at community service in sports and sports propagation through audio and visual media.
LNIPE is located in Shaktinagar, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, at Agra - Mumbai Highway, on 153 hectares of land, which has faculty blocks, auditoriums, research blocks, laboratories and administrative buildings. It is an accredited National Assessment and Accreditation Board and an institution approved by UGC and has been certified by ISO 9001: 2008, ISO 14001: 2004 and ISO 18001: 2007 through United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Department
Department of Physical Education Pedagogy
The original name is 'Teacher Education Department' when it was launched in 2003, with the introduction of a three-year BPE course, aimed at educating qualified physical education teachers in India. In 2011, his name was changed to 'Department of Physical Education Pedagogy' and the BPE course was made in line with other professional courses in India with a duration of four years.
The BPE course is now an eight-semester integrated course and programmed to foster physical education teachers at the secondary school level. Regardless of the BPE course, the department conducts other courses from certificate to doctoral level, orientation courses, seminars, and workshops and provides consulting services.
Department of Physiology Training
The Department of Physiology Exercises are set up to instill knowledge at the postgraduate level to dress professionals who can work in sports, maintain the fitness levels of the athletes to enable them to perform at the highest level. The main focus areas are treatments related to exercise, rehabilitation, cardiovascular impact, diabetes, aging, obesity, physiological aspects of extreme sports, unused atrophy, and other related topics.
Department of Sports Psychology
This department attends Master's students to equip them to use the knowledge of sports psychology in the practical arena. The course covers topics such as history, development and sports theory and sports psychology. The Department encourages advanced research in the subject.
Department of Sports Biomechanics
The Department of Sports Biomechanics is entrusted with the responsibility to teach MPEd students in specialized fields of sports engineering in relation to human movement. Teaching methods include other curricular subjects and are based on research methodologies.
Department of Health and Wellness
The department has a two-dimensional mandate: to keep staff and students at an optimal level of fitness and to provide knowledge and nurture proficiency in health and fitness care. The department aims to produce health and fitness care professionals who can pursue a career in this field.
Training Center and Sports Management
The center is a nodal institution in developing professional sports coaching, improving sports coaching standards in India and for creating awareness and knowledge of the latest sports coaching techniques, technologies, and theoretical developments around the world. The center also focuses on the deployment of modern sports management techniques amidst sports coaches and sports management professionals in India.
Advanced Study Center
The center began functioning in 2009 and acts as a nodal institution for higher research in physical education. It also familiarizes students with advanced scientific equipment.
Dr. P. M. Joseph Central Library
The institute's central library is well-stocked and open to students, staff and researchers. The library is named after renowned and award-winning educator Padmashri, Dr. P. M. Joseph.

LNIPE has established three additional centers: Academy of Academic Staff, Northeast Regional Center and PYKKA Resource Center.
Academic Staff Academy
The UGC-funded Academic Staff College began working in February 2000 with the aim of organizing a one-month orientation course for faculty in the Assistant Professor class and three weeks in a service course to other faculty. It holds regular seminars and workshops for faculty members, as part of continuing education.
Northeast Regional Center
The Northeast Overseas LNIPE Center was established in 2009 in Guwahati in the state of Assam on a 55-hectare campus, modern infrastructure housing at the Tepesia Sports Complex, Sonapur, Guwahati. The institute is fully residential with versatile indoor space for Handball, Badminton, Weightlifting, Gymnasium, Judo, Table Tennis, Boxing Ring and yoga and other facilities like Cycling Velodrome, Archery Range, Kayaking and Kano Facility, Soccer Field, Cricket Ground, Field volley ball, Lawn Tennis court, Kabaddi land and Kho Kho land.
PYKKA Resource Center
Yuva Krida Panchayat Center Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) was formed with the aim of spreading sports culture across the country at the grassroots level, starting from panchayats. It was formulated under Dr. A K Dutta a professor from LNIPE. It hosts annual competitions in blocks, districts, states and national levels, provides basic infrastructure and sports equipment for rural areas and helps train the main trainers through regular refresher courses. It maintains regularly updated documentation on the main trainers in India. The center is on the LNIPE campus in Gwalior.
Publications
LNIPE publishes journals and bulletins for the dissemination of new knowledge and developments in the discipline.
