History
Merritt College opened as a public campus in 1954. It has been known as the Merritt School of Business, and along with what is now Laney College, is operated by Oakland Unified School District as Oakland Junior College.
In 1963, residents of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, and Piedmont chose to form a community college district. The district began operating under the name of Peralta on July 1, 1964. The name Peralta was chosen because all the district towns, now part of the larger Oakland metropolitan area, are located on the original Spanish grant ground for Sergeant. LuÃÆ's MarÃÆ'a Peralta from August 1820.
In 1965, a bond issue was passed that established the Oakland city center building for Laney College (opened in 1970), a new campus for Merritt College (opened in 1971) and the establishment of the College of Alameda.
Berkeley City College was founded in 1974 and operated under the name of Vista Community College until 2006, when it began operating from a permanent site.
Feather River College was operated by CCD Peralta from 1968 to 1988, when Plumas District was annexed from the district; now operates as a flagship campus in its own district.
The Peralta District is governed by a Supervisory Board of seven members elected by the public within the district boundaries. Two members of the students sit on the board, but only have "advisory voices."
The district chancellor is Dr. Jowel C. Laguerre. The district has five vice rectors.
