Histori

Prior to the 1960s, only technology institutes and vocational centers were collaborating with universities in the province of Ontario on a post-secondary level, and many of these schools were established primarily to help veterans rejoin the community in the postwar years. In response to the increasing need for technical education, the Minister of Education (later Premier) William Davis, who is now regarded as "the father of the Ontario College System", established a college of applied art and technology in Ontario to train individuals to work in their respective communities.. St. Lawrence College was established during this period in 1967 as part of a provincial initiative to create many such institutions. These schools are designed to provide career-oriented diplomas and certificate programs, as well as continuing education programs in the communities in which they are located.

Brockville was originally proposed as a site for the main St. campus. Lawrence College, but Kingston was eventually chosen, as a larger population base would enable him to support the full campus. For the site, 24 hectares of farmland (24 acres) was purchased from Ontario Psychiatric Hospital (now operated by the Providence Sustainable Care Center) located on King St. W. and Portsmouth Ave. Brockville will maintain a smaller campus, while the Cornwall and Kingston campuses are designed to serve six districts in East Ontario (ie Frontenac, Leeds, Grenville, Dundas, Stormont and Glengary).

Some of the full-time courses offered include programs such as Business Administration, Home Economics, Early Childhood Education, Engineering Technology, and Electronic Technician. Today, about 89 courses are offered.

In response to increased registrations, in part due to a double cohort, the Ontario college has received funding for expansion in recent years, including St Lawrence College which has grown tremendously since its inception.
