A odor bomb is a device designed to create unpleasant odors. They range in effectiveness from simple pranks to military grade malodorants or riot chemical agents.
The Guinness Book of Records lists two of the dirtiest substances: one is "US Government Standard Bathroom"; a mixture of eight chemicals with an odor resembling human excrement, is only much stronger, designed to test the efficacy of deodorizer and air freshener, and the other, "Who am I?", is a mixture of five chemicals containing sulfur and smells like rotting food and carrion..

At the lower end of the spectrum, relatively harmless smelly bombs consist of ammonium sulfide, which smells strongly of rotten eggs. When exposed to air, ammonium sulfide reacts with moisture, hydrolyzes, and a mixture of hydrogen sulfide (the smell of rotten eggs) and ammonia is released. Other popular substances underlying odor bombs are lower molecular weight thiols, such as methyl mercaptan and ethyl mercaptan - chemicals that odor skunks and are added in small amounts to natural gas to make gas leaks detected by smell.. Variations on this idea are bomb scent , or perfume bomb , filled with the perfume smell of "perfume cheap" that sting.
At the top end of the spectrum, the Israeli and US governments are developing smelly bombs for use by their law and military enforcement agencies as control of riots and denial of territory. Using smelly bombs for these purposes has advantages over traditional riot control agents: unlike pepper sprays and tear gas, odor bombs are believed to be harmless, and they are effective at low concentrations.
Prank smelling bombs and perfume bombs are usually sold as a sealed glass ampoule of 1 or 2 ml, which can be broken by throwing it to a hard surface or by crushing it under a shoe sole, thus releasing the foul-smelling fluid contained within it. Another type of prank smell bomb consists of two bags, one smaller and inside the other. The deep contains the fluid and the outer is the powder. When the inside ruptures by squeezing it, the liquid reacts with the powder, producing hydrogen sulfide, which expands and erupts the outer pouch, releasing unpleasant odors.

Chemicals used
Typically, volatile organic compounds with lower molecular weight are used. Generally higher molecular weights for a particular class of compounds, lower volatility and initial concentration but longer persistence. Some chemicals (usually thiols) have a certain concentration threshold where the odor is not felt significantly stronger; therefore lower volatility compounds are capable of providing odor intensity comparable to higher volatility compounds, but for longer periods of time. Another problem is the operating temperature, where the volatility of the compound is highly dependent. Treatment should be performed because of some toxic compounds either in higher concentrations or after long exposures in low concentrations.
Some plants can be used as improvised odor bombs; one such plant is Parkia speciosa or 'stinky bean', which grows in India, Southeast Asia and East Australia. Pods from this plant are collected when partially dried and stamped, to release the odor.
