Type II collagen is the basis for articular cartilage and hyaline cartilage, formed by collagen type, type II, alpha chain 1 collagen.
It makes up 50% of all proteins in cartilage and 85-90% of collagen from articular cartilage.
Collagen type II does not form fibrils. This fibrillar collagen network allows the cartilage to trap proteoglycan aggregation and provide tensile strength to the tissues. Individual oral administration of collagen type II induces oral tolerance to pathological immune responses and may be useful in arthritis.
