History

The campus was established in 1963 as an Advanced Teacher Training School with technical assistance from UNESCO. It is charged with teacher training responsibilities in line with Ashby's report on Higher Education in Nigeria. In 1973, through Decree No 11 endorsed by Nigeria Middle East State Administrator Ukpabi Asika, Higher Education Teachers became Education Colleges and named Alvan Ikoku in honor of Mr. Alvan Ikoku, a teacher and educator, founder of the African middle school in Nigeria (Aggrey Memorial Grammar School) and President of Nigeria Teachers Association (NUT) for many years.

The college starts with 150 students but in 2012 the student population has grown to over 13,000, with over 600 academic staff. The students include regular students, sandwich course students, night and weekend students and post-graduate learning Professional Diplomas in Education. In 1976, a college catering campus for the Department of Agriculture was established in Umuahia, now the capital of the State of Abia. Next was the establishment of the Orlu campus in 1981, but the multi-campus system ended in 1987 and the college was returned to a single campus institution.

In 2007, the Federal Government took over college and morphed into Alvan Ikoku's Federal College of Education, Owerri. The Federal Government takeover brings better financial aid and the College has been able to renovate its dilapidated structures, build large classrooms, laboratories and hostels and expand staff strength. On May 20, 2015, the Nigerian Federal Government under President Goodluck Jonathan upgraded the school to a complete university to be called the Alok Ikoku University of Education.

Akademisi

The establishment of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri in 1963, just three years after Nigeria's independence was a milestone in education in Nigeria, especially in the Southeast. As an institution solely eager to research, teach and train teachers for the secondary and higher education sectors, colleges in the last fifty years have contributed to the production of qualified teachers in the country. In 1984, the college became affiliated with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to provide a bachelor's degree in various subject areas.

The college houses students in a dormitory named alphabet from A-G. The campus has students from all over the country and some countries from West Africa, especially Spanish-speaking countries whose citizens come to study English at the Center for International English Studies (ICES). The college has a female student population dominated by women who reach more than 80%. As a result, the women's volleyball team is one of the strongest in college matches in the country, consistently winning gold or silver at the Nigerian Olympic Education College (NICEGA).

The sandwich program caters to people who are pursuing a teaching career who want to improve their education. These students study during the holidays when regular undergraduate students have disbanded and elementary and secondary schools are taking a break. The Sandwich system has enabled many teachers to gain relevant credentials for advancement in the teaching profession. Students have a Student Union Government (SUG) led by the elected President and Student Representative Council (SRC), an elected student legislator body. Regardless of the dominant female population, President SUG is always male.

The college runs a demonstration school. They are AIFCE Kindergarten/Nursery School, AIFCE Primary School Staff and Alvana Model Secondary School. Primary School Staff was formed in 1983 and secondary schools began in October 1994. The satellite school was established to help teachers and students carry out their teaching practice, the key requirements for graduation, and to complete the educational needs of staff and the general public by providing professionally managed at three levels.
