History

The training of naval officers at Dartmouth dates from 1863, when the HMSÃ © hulk of timber, Britannia was moved from Portland and tethered on the Dart River to base. In 1864, after the entry of new recruits, Britannia was completed by HMSÃ, Hindostan . Prior to this, the Royal Naval Academy (later Royal Naval College) had been in operation for over a century from 1733 to 1837 in Portsmouth, a major naval installation. The original Britannia was replaced by Prince of Wales in 1869, named Britannia.

The foundation stone for the new building on campus was laid by King Edward VII in March 1902. Sir Aston Webb designed a beach-based campus in Dartmouth, built by Higgs and Hill and was practically completed in 1905.

The first term cadets enter at R.N. The Osborne College moved to Dartmouth in September 1905.

The college was originally known as Royal Naval College, Dartmouth (BRNC). As the establishment of the Royal Naval beach, it was later also known as the ship name HMS Britannia (a warship named Britannia operated from 1904 to 1918). The college was given the name (ship name: HMS Dartmouth ) in 1953, when the name Britannia was given to the newly launched HMYÃ yMHH yacht < i>> Britannia . The training ship moored on the Dart River in Sandquay, currently a former Sandpool classminehunter HMSÃ, , continues to be the name of Hindostan .

Cadet originally joined Royal Naval College, Osborne, at the age of 13 to study and work two years before joining Dartmouth. They studied there for four years there before starting marine training at age 17. RNC Osborne closed in 1923. The entry age for Naval College was changed to 16 in 1948, and became 17 and 6 months in 1955. Until 1941, Dartmouth are in effect a special boarding school, with parents paying fees for tuition and boards.

During the Second World War, after six Focke-Wulf aircraft bombed the College in September 1942, students and staff moved activities to Eaton Hall in Cheshire until the fall of 1946. Two bombs had broken through the main College block, causing damage to the quarterdeck and surrounding rooms.

Today's campus

At the beginning of the 21st century, officer cadets, as known to faint from campus, can join between the ages of 18 and 32. While most cadets join BRNC after completing university, some join directly from high school. All spend between 30 and 49 weeks on campus, depending on the specialization. The large contingent of foreign students and the Commonwealth is part of the student body. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary sent an officer cadet to BRNC for an initial 8 weeks training officer course, before they started at a maritime college.

Following the closure of Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon, in 1994 and Royal Naval College, Greenwich, in 1998, the BRNC was the only naval academy in the United Kingdom.

Slightly removed from the main building is Sandquay, which is under the campus on the Dart River. It is mainly used for shipping and ship handling training. Cadets were asked to find out that there are 187 steps from college to Sandquay.
