History

Eastern Arizona College was inaugurated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1888. Class began in a church room in Central, Arizona in 1890 with 17 students and was called St. Joseph Stake Academy. In 1891, the class transferred to Thatcher, Arizona, became more centralized and due to space constraints. Schools continue to grow, although it is financially tied up. In 1908, a new 21-room building was opened which would eventually be called Old Main.

In 1932, the Church declared that they were no longer able to support the college financially and would close it unless the local valley could support it. In 1933, Graham County residents passed the school funding initiative. The state of Arizona took over the school, changing its name to Gila Junior College of Graham County. The name was changed to Eastern Arizona Junior College in 1950, then only Eastern Arizona College in 1966. In 1962, it was the inaugural member of the newly created Junior College system in Arizona. The year 1960 was the time of growth and college bought the nearby farmland to expand their campus.

In 1972 a fine art center was completed. In 1979, two fires within a week destroyed the Old Main. The building was flattened and a new administration building was built on the site. During the academic year 1987-1988, Eastern Arizona College celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Eastern Arizona College has renamed nine times, grown from a one-room school to a large community campus serving three counties and hosting a university campus for the university.

In December 2012, after 10 years of lobbying, Eastern Arizona College launched its first bachelor degree program in partnership with Arizona State University. Undergraduate degree programs cover nursing and business.
