Use in commercial movies
Historical records found often used in documentary films as primary information sources, giving viewers a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Ken Burns's director and cinematographer uses archival records in his films. Baseball (1994), a documentary television series for PBS, incorporates historical recordings accompanied by music or original actors who read relevant written documents.
Often fictional films mimic this style to enhance their originality, especially mockumentary genres. In a dramatized and decorated pseudo-documentary film F For Fake (1973), director Orson Welles borrows all the main subjects of Elmyr de Hory from the BBC documentary, rather than making the recording himself.
Stuart Cooper Overlord used a recording of landing stocks in Normandy during World War II to boost realism. The tape was obtained from the Imperial War Museum in England. Another part of the film was shot by Cooper, but used stock of World War II era films with a World War II era lens.

Music videos and VJing
Certain styles of music videos make extensive use of recording found, mostly found on TV, such as news, documentaries, old (and strange) movies, etc. A prominent example is video bands like Public Enemy and Coldcut. The latter also projected video material during their stage performances, which included the mixing of live video footage. Artists like Vicki Bennett, also known as People Like Us, or Kasumi video artists with Shockwaves movies, use the Creative Commons archive like Archive Archives.
