Lews Castle College (Scottish Gaelic: Colaisde a 'Chaisteil ['k ?? l ???? t ???' k? a? t? al] , meaning" College of the Castle ") is further and college of higher education in the Western Isles of Scotland. The main campus at Lews Castle, Stornoway. The College also has two learning centers at Benbecula and Barra. The college is part of the University of the Highlands and Islands.
Higher Education opened in September 1953; the first principal was Colonel John Macsween. Initially managed by local authorities. It has 83 students and 9 full-time faculty members. In 1993, the College became an independent entity under the Advanced Education and Higher Education (Scottish) Act 1992. The Lews Castle was originally used as accommodation for students, but is currently in need of renovation.
In December 2012, the college has 2,700 students enrolled in 150 part-time, part-time and online courses, representing nine different nationalities, and employing 130 staff.
In 2014, colleges announced a new Scottish Gaelic degree program to cover the history of Highland, heritage and literature. This course should be taught in English but will also enable a variety of language learning paths. It also has a Gaelic degree taught through the Gaelic media.
College has a subsidiary, Lews Castle College (Trading) Limited, which provides the Gaelic translation service [1].
