History

The Phoenix High School District established the Phoenix Junior College (now Phoenix College) in 1920 as the first community college in the state of Arizona. In 1960, the state legislature was reserved for junior college districts in Arizona. The Maricopa County Junior College District was established in 1962 with the approval of regional voters, with a new system acquiring Phoenix Junior College.

This system forms the branch campuses of Phoenix Junior College in the adjacent suburbs of Glendale and Mesa; this will be an independent campus within the system by the end of the decade (1965). Another campus was established in the following years:

  • Southwest Skill Center (now part of GateWay Community College) in 2000;
  • Maricopa Technical College (now GateWay Community College) in 1968;
  • Scottsdale Community College in 1969;
  • Rio Salado Community College in 1978;
  • South Mountain Community College in 1980;
  • Northeast Valley Education Center (now Paradise Valley Community College) in 1985;
  • Chandler/Gilbert Education Center (now Chandler-Gilbert Community College) in 1985;
  • Estrella Mountain Community College in 1990;
  • Red Mountain campus section at Mesa Community College in 2001;
  • Glendale Community College North in 2008;
  • Paradise Valley Community College in Black Mountain in 2009.

In 1971, the "Junior College" section was renamed "Community College".

The State Board of Directors for Community Colleges of Arizona led the entire state university system until June 2002, when the Arizona Legislature reduced its power and duties and transferred most of the surveillance to individual community college districts.

Established in 2013, corporate colleges develop and implement solutions for new and existing Arizona businesses based on identified specific needs. Corporate colleges provide consultative services for businesses, and continue education for professionals, and will oversee district entrepreneurial activities and initiatives, such as business incubators at the GateWay Community College campus. Using the best practices of successful corporate academies implemented in Ohio, North Carolina, Texas, Florida and Indiana, the Maricopa corporate colleges provide unaccredited training. This means it will function independently from 10 Maricopa community colleges and two skills centers, while utilizing their faculty and facilities resources when needed. In addition to working with entrepreneurs who move to the Valley, it offers professional and continuing education programs to establish companies and associations.

    Maricopa Community College District, or Maricopa Community Colleges for short, is also known as Maricopa County Community District (MCCCD). This is the name of the legal entity of the District. Some are puzzled by the abbreviation Maricopa Community Colleges for Mesa Community College (MCC), one of the top ten Maricopa colleges. Therefore, the District's official initialization is MCCCD, while Mesa is the MCC.
