History

Missouri Valley College was founded in 1889. The history of Missouri Valley College began during a conference at Sarcoxie, Missouri, on 27 October 1874 where representatives of several Presbyterian synods in the state of Missouri met to discuss the establishment of the school. This school is affiliated with Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Located in the heart of America, Missouri Valley College today is a vibrant high learning center with a growing national and global reach, a destination for students from all fifty states and forty foreign countries.

The original building of the college, Old Main or Baity Hall (Old Main was renamed in honor of Rev. Dr. George P. Baity, an early graduate and president of the Supervisory Board from 1918 to 1947) was built in 1889 as a three-storey brick building with towers, turrets, gables, and Gothic jewelry in Victorian style. It accommodates all the functions of the College: classrooms, offices, gyms for men and women, a chapel, dining room, library, museum, dormitory, and laboratory. Still leading the campus today, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places List of Historic Places. The Victorian-era building is famous for its beautiful wooden staircases, vaulted wood ceilings and stained glass windows located throughout the building, especially on the third floor.

The history of the College is told by the large room on the third floor of the south wing. Crutch-shaped with glass windows and vaulted wood ceilings, it has served as a chapel and gymnasium. Renovated in the summer of 2002, it now serves the success of students or "Learning Centers" while maintaining a rich history.

In 1890, students planted 1,200 cypress trees and died on campus. The Arboretum boasts remarkable specimens of many species, including ginkgo biloba trees, American chestnuts, sycamore, and the largest catalpa tree in the state, which stands 89 feet tall and 215 inches wide with the spread of a 65 foot crown
