Critical reception
Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings was greeted with very mixed reviews. At Metacritic, which gives a normalized rating of 100 to reviews of criticism, the album received an average score of 56, indicating "mixed or averaged reviews", based on 18 reviews. AllMusic senior critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine highlighted the album, stating: "While it's interesting for a while, at some point - and it arrives rather quickly - the attraction appeal and hard not to feel unclean, as if you are lurking through your beloved brother's desk. "Alexis Petridis of The Guardian criticized the release, saying" In 21 years, the posthumous Nirvana industry has changed from the shockingly unveiling of MTV Unplugged in New York to actually releasing the recording of Kurt Cobain making the sound fart. "Furthermore, Jayson Green of Pitchfork points out that" The Home Recordings marks the point at which the exploit enters the absurd. "
Nevertheless, Kyle Anderson of Entertainment Weekly praised the album, regarding it as "a cultural artefact that gives a deep insight into the creative process of an enigmatic genius." Tiny Mix Tapes' critic Joe Hemmerling writes: "There is a pleasure to be found here, especially in Cobain's left-field trip to the Burroughs-ian collage, but these pleasures will have very little value for anyone who is not convinced of the genius of the author."
