History

After World War II, local leaders anticipated the return of young people to college. Four local high school districts have chosen to approve the establishment of Mt. San Antonio Community College District in December 1945. The board wasted little time. They soon began to meet on December 26, 1945, and set out to find suitable locations and employ staff. They rented from the state of California, a former US Navy hospital located on an area of 445 hectares in a place unrelated to Walnut. The land has a building from since 1919, when it was home to a recalcitrant boy. It was also the State Narcotics Hospital before the war.

Rent began on July 1, 1946, and newly hired staff immediately set out to open the campus and began offering falling classes. With a small budget of $ 191,790, faculty and staff work non-stop to collect furniture and supplies, design courses, and enroll students. Family members and students volunteered to help collect inventory and paint the walls. The school opened for classes on September 16, 1946, with 682 students enrolled taking classes in programs organized under 7 divisions and 12 departments.

The college has invested more than $ 500 million in renewing its facilities through public support of the Measure R and Measure RR bonds. The college has a 250-acre farm; a veterinary hospital that works; new science classrooms and laboratory facilities; a music, dance and theater building; multi-media/internet connected classrooms; a new baseball complex; a football pitch; putting green; two soccer fields; and is the home of Mt. SAC Relays. It has an Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, and working farms including horses, cows, sheep, pigs and dog facilities that work with greyhound rescue groups to rehabilitate retired dogs every semester. The school also has a 15 acres (6.1 ha) wildlife reserve that supports a wide variety of birds, mammals and insects. It consists of lakes, swamps, rivers, ponds, grasslands, and wooded areas. This is one of the last "safe" places for natural existence in Walnut due to increased development and population growth.

The Randall Planetarium has been open since 1968. There are more projects underway, the latest being a complex of modern agricultural science, including a functioning animal hospital, is set to complete construction in spring 2011. Construction has also started in the new Design Technology building. More projects are also expected in the next few years as funds from the size approved by voters have recently come. Located on campus are some campus cafes and "Common Grounds" areas.

Cross Country Invitational

Since the first event in 1948, Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational has grown to become the largest event of its kind in the world. It is often rich in running traditions because the generation in the family may have run it in the past. Mt. SAC is considered one of the most challenging cross-country programs in the country.

The runners start with a long airstrip (run) and run on three hills. The Valley Loop is a flat loop at the start of the race in which runners usually overtake the others. The first mile, because the surface is flat and hard very fast. This mile was immediately followed by a switchback on the first side of the hill. It consists of four tight hairpins. The switchback is very technical because runners often pack this area, and the hill itself is steep and loose. Arguably, the most challenging obstacle is the famous "dumper" hill, which is the steepest hill in the field (and also the shortest one). The last climbing runner to be conquered before going down steep to the finished flat area is Reservoir Hill, which is a steady uphill. The end of the race swings back to the start (on the runway), passing behind where the runner for the next race is staged. It is also designed for speed and wraps right around the audience area for a quick and exciting finish at the entrance gate of Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
