History

In 1944 William J. Trent, an old activist for education for blacks, joined Tuskegee Institute President Frederick D. Patterson and Mary McLeod Bethune to set up UNCF, a nonprofit organization that unites college presidents to collect money collectively through "a call to the national conscience". As the first executive director of the organization's beginning in 1944 to 1964, Trent raised $ 78 million for an historical black college so that they could become "a strong fort of learning, American dream bearers, social evolutionary nurseries and revolution". In 2008, UNCF shifted from using its full name to use its initials, releasing new logos with just initials and displaying their slogans more clearly.

Fundraising and Lou Rawls Star Parade

UNCF has received charitable donations for its scholarship program. One of the high profile donations made was by US senator and future president John F. Kennedy who donated money from the Pulitzer Prize for his IMF's Profile in Courage . The largest single donation ever made in 1990 by Walter Annenberg, who donated $ 50 million for the fund.

Beginning in 1980, singer Lou Rawls started the "Lou Rawls Parade of Stars" telekon to benefit UNCF. The annual event, now known as "An Evening of Stars", consists of success stories of African-American students who have graduated or benefited from one of the many universities and universities that are historically black and who receive support from UNCF. Telethon features comedy and musical performances from various artists to support UNCF and Rawls efforts. The event has raised more than $ 200 million in 27 gigs for funding through 2006.

In January 2004, Rawls was awarded by the United Negro College Fund for more than 25 years of charity work with the organization. Instead of hosting and the show Rawls, he was given a place of honor and celebrated by his colleagues, including Stevie Wonder, The O'Jays, Gerald Levert, Ashanti, and several others. Prior to his death in January 2006, Rawls's last performance was a record for the 2006 telethon that honored Wonder, months before entering the hospital after being diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year.

In addition to telethon, there are a number of other fundraising events, including the annual "Walk for Education" held in Los Angeles, California, which covers five kilometers of walking/running. In Houston, Texas, Cypresswood Golf Club hosts an annual golf tournament in April.

In 2014, Koch Industries Inc. and the Charles Koch Foundation grants $ 25 million to the UNCF. In protest from Koch, the American Federation of State, District and City, the main union, ended its annual support of $ 50,000-60,000 for UNCF.

Moto UNCF

In 1972, the UNCF adopted the slogan of the saying "Thoughts are a terrible thing to waste." This proverb has become one of the best known slogans in the history of advertising. The motto was primarily destroyed in a 1989 speech to the organization by United States vice-president Dan Quayle, who stated: "And you take the UNCF model that what is in vain is losing the mind or not having a very wasteful mind. which has been used in various award-winning UNCF advertising campaigns, created by Forest Long, from the advertising agency Young & amp; Rubicam, in partnership with the Ad Council.

A lesser-known slogan also used by the UNCF, referring to the intended beneficiaries, shows about them, "[They] did not ask for a leaflet, just a hand."
