The University of Hawaii? I'm in M? Noa (also known as UH M? Noa , the University of Hawaii? I , or just UH ) is a co-research university - public education and campus flagship University of Hawaii system? i. The school is located in M? Noa, a prosperous neighborhood in Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii? I, USA, about three miles east and inland from downtown Honolulu and one mile (1.6 km) from Ala Moana and Waikiki. The campus occupies the eastern part of the mouth of the Valley of MÃ ¢ noa. John A. Burns Medical School, part of Hawai'i University in Manoa, is located in Kaka'ako, adjacent to Kaka'ako Marine Park. It is accredited by the Western Schools and Colleges Association from the western US mainland and is governed by the Hawaii State Legislature and the semi-autonomous councils of the regents, who, in turn, employ a president to become an administrator. The university campus is also home to the main office of the entire University of Hawaii system? I.

History

University of Hawaii? I in M? Noa was founded in 1907 as a college of agriculture and mechanical arts. The bill by Maui Representative William Coelho was introduced into the Legislative Territory of 1 March 1907 and signed into law March 23 by the Governor allowing the construction to begin. In 1912, his name was changed to College of Hawaii and moved to its present location. William Kwai Fong Yap petitioned to the Hawaiian Territorial Legislature six years later for university status which led to another name change eventually to the University of Hawaii in 1920. It was also the year of the founding of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1931, the School of Training and the Territorial Environment was absorbed into the University, becoming U.H. College of Education.

Higher Education

Currently, the main aspects of the university consist of four Colleges of Arts and Science: Arts and Humanities, Language, Literature and Linguistics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. College of agriculture and mechanical arts is now the School of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), one of the few agricultural colleges in the United States focusing on the tropics. UH M? Noa is home to two of the most famous professional schools in the state. The William S. Richardson School of Law and School of Medicine is the only law and medical school in Hawaii? I. It is also home to the Shidler College of Business which has the only AACSB accredited graduate business program in the state. He also has the only Architecture Doctorate program in the country. The Hawaii Study Center provides' excellence in pursuing knowledge of Hawaii's natives.

Together, university colleges offer undergraduate degrees in 93 subject areas, a master's degree in 84 fields, a doctorate in 51 fields, a first professional degree in 5 fields, a post-baccalaureate degree in 3 fields, 28 undergraduate certification courses and 29 graduates certification program. The number of enrollments in 2012 is 20,429 students, 14,402 of whom are students. There are about sixteen students per instructor.

Research

With an offshore grant and a $ 436 million contract in 2012, research on UH-M? Noa deals with the physical landscape of Hawaii, its people and their heritage. Geography facilitates advances in marine biology, oceanography, underwater robot technology, astronomy, geology and geophysics, agriculture, aquaculture and tropical medicine. Its heritage, its people, and its close links with the Asia and Pacific region create a favorable environment for study and research in the fields of art, genetics, intercultural relations, linguistics, religion and philosophy.

Extramural funding increased from $ 368 million in FY 2008 to nearly $ 436 million in FY 2012. Research grants increased from $ 278 million in FY 2008 to $ 317 million in FY 2012. The non-research award amounts to $ 119 million in FY 2012. Overall, foreign funding increased by 18%.

The National Science Foundation puts the 45th UH Manoa among 395 state universities for Research and Development (R & D) expenses in fiscal year 2014.

For the period from 1 July 2012 to 20 June 2013, the School of Science and Technology of Marine and Earth Science (SOEST) received the largest extramural funding among Manoa units of $ 92 million. SOEST was followed by a $ 57 million medical school, the College of Natural Sciences and the University of Hawaii's Cancer Center for $ 24 million, the $ 22 million Institute for Astronomy, CTARH $ 18 million, and the College of Social Sciences and College of Education $ 16 million.

Research (widely understood) is expected from every faculty member at UH M? Noa. Also, according to the Carnegie Foundation, UH M? Noa is a research university level RU/VH (research activity is very high).

In 2013, UH M? Noa was elected to membership at the University of Pacific Association, a leading research university consortium for the region. APRU represents 45 major research universities - with a collective of 2 million students and 120,000 faculty members - out of 16 economies.

Demographics

According to a 2010 report from the Institute for Institutional Research, a number of students at the University of Hawaii? I'm in M? Noa is a Caucasian that makes up twenty-five percent of the student body. Other backgrounds include Japanese Americans (13%) percent, indigenous or partly Hawaiian indigenous (13%), Filipino Filipinos (8%) and Chinese Americans (7%). Twelve percent are racially mixed. The smaller Pacific Islander population and other ethnic groups form a balance.

Facilities

All UH M dorms? Noa is coeducational. These include the Hale Aloha Complex, Johnson Hall, Hale Laulima, and Hale Kahawai. Suite-style living halls include Frear Hall and Gateway House. First year students who choose to live on campus live in traditional dormitories.

Two stylish apartment complexes are Hale Noelani and Hale Wainani. Hale Noelani consists of five three-story buildings and Hale Wainani has two tall buildings (one floor 14 and one 13th floor) and two low-rise buildings. Second year scholars and above were allowed to live in Hale Noelani and Hale Wainani.

Academics

Colleges and schools

UH-M? Noa has 19 schools and colleges, including the School of Architecture, the School of Earth Sciences and Technology, the College of Arts and Humanities, the Shidler Business Colleges, the College of Education and the College of Engineering. The College of Business Administration was renamed to Shidler College of Business on September 6, 2006, after real estate executive Jay Shidler, a college alumnus, who donated $ 25 million for college.

Honors Program

UH-Manoa offers an Honors Program to provide additional resources for students preparing to enroll in a professional school program. Students complete core curriculum courses for their degrees in the Honors Program, maintaining at least a cumulative 3.2 grade-average in all courses, and completing a senior thesis project.

Library

The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library, which provides access to 3.4 million volumes, 50,000 journals, and thousands of digital documents, is one of the largest academic research libraries in the United States, ranked 86th in parent institution investment among 113 American members Northern Association of Research Libraries.

Off-campus

  • The Newman/Catholic Campus Center serves communities in the University and surrounding areas.
  • The Lyon Arboretum is the only tropical arboretum of the University of the United States. Arboretum, located in Valley M? Noa, was established in 1918 by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association to demonstrate watershed recovery and test tree species for reforestation, as well as to collect living plants with economic value. In 1953, it became part of the University of Hawaii? I'm in M? Noa. More than 15,000 accessions focus primarily on the monocot family of palms, ginger, heliconias, bromeliads and aroids.
  • The Waikiki Aquarium, founded in 1904, is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States. Part of the University of Hawaii? I am since 1919, the Aquarium is located next to a live reef on the coastline of Waikiki.

Athletics

University of Hawaii? I'm in M? Noa competed in NCAA Division I, the only Hawaiian school to do so. It competes at the Western Mountain Conference just for football and the Big West Conference for most other sports. UH competes in the Pacific Mountain Sport Federation in men's, men's and women's pools and dives, and indoor tracks and squares while female and female sailing teams are members of the Collegiate Pacific Coast Sailing Conference.

The men's team is known as the Rainbow Warriors, and the women's team is called Rainbow Wahine. They are most prominent for basketball, volleyball, baseball and men's and women's soccer programs. The University won the 2004 National Sailing Association Championships. The women's volleyball program won the NCAA championships in 1982, 1983 and 1987. The men's volley won the NCAA championship in 2002, but was later emptied for offense.

The main sports venues are Aloha Stadium, Stan Sheriff Center, Les Murakami Stadium, Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, and Kahanamoku Duke Water Complex.

The university's athletic budget in FY 2008-2009 was $ 29.6 million.
