" Mittageisen " is a song by the English post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. It originally appeared on the band's 1978 debut album The Scream as "Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)"; the song was re-recorded in 1979, this time with the lyrics sung in German, and released as a single in West Germany. Then in September of that year was given a British release by Polydor record label.

Content and arms
The title "Mittageisen" is a play of words based on the German words "Mittagessen" (literally: "lunch", ie lunch) and Eisen ("iron"). The title is inspired by John Heartfield's photocollage Hore, die Butter ist Alle! ("Hooray, the Butter is Finished!"), Which is also used as a cover art single.
Photocollage Heartfield originally used on the front page Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung ( Worker Illustrated Journal ), was published on December 19, 1935. This artist was an early member of the Dada Club, which began in 1916 as Cabaret Voltaire in ZÃÆ'¼rich. Pictures with the title 'Hore, die Butter ist Alle!/Hooray, butter is done! 'indicates a family that eats various pieces of metal. The trigger for that is the following quote from Hermann GÃÆ'¶ring: "Iron always makes a strong nation, butter and lard just make people fat".

Write and record
"Mittageisen" was composed by Siouxsie Sioux, John McKay, Kenny Morris and Steven Severin; the lyrics were translated into German by their manager, Dave Woods, and a woman named Renate. The single is dedicated to John Heartfield.
The B-side, "Love in a Void", was composed by Severin and previous Banshees guitarist, Peter Fenton. The track was an early live favorite; it was also the first song of their first John Peel session, recorded at the end of November 1977. "Love in a Void" has not been recorded for Polydor until this release.
Release
"Mittageisen" was released as a single in the UK by Polydor's record label in September 1979. The record was promoted as a double A-side release at the time, but only "Mittageisen" was mapped on the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at number 47. However "Love in a Void" - but not "Mittageisen" - was included in the 1981 single band compilation Once Upon a Time: The Singles, which compiled all of their A-sides up to that point, and then on Rematered edition 2006 Join Hand . Putatif A-side "Mittageisen" then appears in the B-side band compilation Downside Up .
In popular culture
"Mittageisen" was covered and sampled by Massive Attack as "Superpredators (Metal Postcard)" in 1997, on the soundtrack of The Jackal . Black metal group Darkthrone recorded the cover of "Love in a Void" on their album Too Old, Too Cold EP, released in 2006. The Swiss band Mittageisen is named after this song.
