Virginia Intermont College (VI) is a private four-year private arts college in Bristol, Virginia. Founded in 1884 to create additional educational opportunities for women, the College has been coeducational since 1972. He experienced significant financial difficulties during the last years of his existence, denied accreditation in 2013, and announced the closure on May 20, 2014.

The name "Intermont" is a reference to the College mountain setting. The Holston Range, which blends into the Blue Ridge Mountains, can be seen from campuses in Bristol, Virginia, part of the Tri-Cities region, which also includes Johnson City and Kingsport, Tennessee.

History

The college was founded as the Southwest Virginia Institute in Glade Spring, Virginia, on September 17, 1884, by the Reverend J.R. Harrison, a Baptist pastor, as a vehicle to bring high education opportunities for women in southwest Virginia. Instructing both boarding students and days, the school continues to grow until it goes beyond the facility in less than ten years.

The college began moving to a new site in Bristol, Virginia, in 1891, completing a relocation with early classes on September 14, 1893. Shortly after the move, the name was changed to the Virginia Institute, then to Virginia Intermont College in 1908 Reorganization of the curriculum in 1910 brought college into the junior college movement and college became the first two-year institution to be accredited by the Association of Colleges and Schools of the South.

During the 1960s, five new buildings were built to accommodate the growth of schools. In the early 1970s, Virginia Intermont became a four-year institution that awarded a bachelor's degree. 1972 marks another major milestone when VI recognizes men and becomes educational institutions.

In July 2010, the university employed its first female president, Dr. E. Clorisa Phillips, who came to VI after 30 years in administration at the University of Virginia. Phillips is working on fundraising initiatives for ongoing renovations and improvements to the historic campus, and adds academic and athletic programs for the 2012-13 academic year.

Reject and close

In January 2014, faced with a decline in enrollment, the college announced plans to join Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida, but this action failed in April. On May 4, 2014, the chairman of the faculty, Dr. Robert Rainwater announced during the 2014 graduation ceremony that VI will close its doors after 130 years of education in the community. Just one day after the 2014 graduation, the supervisory board accepted President Clorisa Phillips's resignation. A statement issued by the college said that Phillips resigned for personal reasons. He has been president for almost four years. The supervisory board puts the daily leadership of the campus with the Compass Executive from Nashville with Art Rebrovick serving as a temporary president and restructuring agent. Colleges arrange teaching the program so it is possible for students to complete their undergraduate education with other colleges.

On June 1, 2014, Virginia Intermont released a custodian of student academic records to King University for the purpose of issuing official academic transcripts.

Campus sales

Bluefield College expressed interest in buying the property, but resigned when the inspection showed there was $ 20 million in deferred care to the buildings. In December 2016, the campus sold for $ 3.3 million for Chinese businessman George Xu, as representative for the US International Education Center, Magis, a New York-based Chinese company. Magis intends to open it as a college in the future. Health care issues reportedly agreed to pay a much higher price for the property, but the bank went on to auction off the property, closing the prospective buyer. A collection of more than $ 5 million in salaries to faculty and staff remains unpaid.

Accreditation

Virginia Intermont College is accredited by the College of Colleges and Southern School Colleges College (SACS) to award Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Social Work. Virginia Intermont's accreditation was reaffirmed in early December 2011, but the College issued a one-year anniversary for not meeting institutional financial standards. In December 2012, college accreditation was not renewed and colleges were placed on probation for six months. At the end of the review period, the SACS board recommended that the college be removed from SACS membership due to failure to "comply with the requirements for financial resources and stability." The college appealed and won a temporary court order to maintain its accreditation even in trial status.

Campus

The original campus building built between 1891 and 1893 comprised the main hall (featuring a dining room, 200 dormitory halls, gymnasium and indoor pool) as well as fine art buildings and two buildings that became classrooms. The original structure, comprising only the main hall today, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 4, 1984. The first major addition to the school was at the beginning of 1920 when Hodges Hall and the current presidential home were built. This was followed by the construction of what is today known as the East Hall in 1922. The gymnasium was built in 1930 which was soon followed by the Library and the Humanities building. No major construction will take place until the early 1960s when Intermont Hall, Science Hall, student center, Harrison-Jones Auditorium, and Worrell Fine Arts Center were built.

In the summer of 2011, the largest classroom building in VI, Science Hall, was totally renovated by adding advanced laboratories and equipment, and updating/renovating was done in the West and Main bathrooms along with air conditioning in the recital and theater halls. All sidewalks on campus are rebuilt in 2011-12. The university is preparing Master Plan for campus renovation and further campus improvement.

School tradition

The May Day's long-held tradition was finally transferred to May Court, a time to recognize seniors elected by their classmates for honor courts that happen each year during graduation celebrations.

Another spring tradition is the Torchlight ceremony, which takes place after a baccalaureate. Graduates parade around the campus and one by one have a torch lit by the president. The group then formed a campus under the Harrison-Jones Memorial Hall and sang a lecture song, "Nil Sine Numine." The song was written by students in 1952 as part of a tradition for students writing and competing with songs that show pride in the institution. The music for the song was taken from a song titled "The Gaudeamus" sung in The Student Prince's musical. The tradition of school songwriting ended when the school became coeducational in 1972.
