History

Shoreline Community College is Dr. Ray W. Howard, supervisor of the Shoreline School District. He feels that Washington State high school graduates do not have adequate opportunities for higher education and "are actively working with other school districts in the area to convince legislators of the need for 'non-traditional' students who can not, because the economic circumstances, are present at University of Washington or other four-year institution. "In 1959 he proposed the idea of a college at Shoreline.

Shoreline Community College started with a nightclub in January 1964, receiving 806 student apps to be taught at Shoreline High School which is now the Shoreline Center. Dr. Howard "retired as head of department in 1963, and spent the last two years with district planning and opening a new Shoreline Community College."

"The Boeing family eventually donated roughly 83 acres on a wooded cliff to Shoreline Community College," and the site was opened for construction in the early 1960s. "In the fall of 1965, the new campus is ready for students."
