Histori

Wolfson Archives is named in honor of the benefactors of Lynn and Louis Wolfson II and was founded in 1984 primarily by philanthropist Lynn Wolfson (1927-2012) journalist Ralph Renick (1928-1991) and Miami historian Arva Moore Parks. It was created under the joint sponsor of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, Miami Dade College, and the University of Miami. Originally, the Archive was placed in the basement area of the Main Library of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, moving to its present location. The mission of the Archive is to: "collect, preserve and create accessible movies and video material made in or about Florida that reflects the history and culture of the region".

The Wolfson Archives has collected 35,000 hours of video tape and 23 million foot films. It is recognized as an official audio-visual material repository by the State of Florida, and one of the largest archives of its kind across the country.

Collection

The Wolfson Archives is dedicated to films produced in or around Florida, and received requests for recordings from famous people such as renowned film maker Ken Burns. This archive stores everything from news footage, home movies, assigned video areas to promotional videos created for local attractions, such as the Parrot Jungle, now called Forest Island. Some of the recordings date as far back as 1910. Also, the Archive helps restore movies that hold historical interest and that runs a deteriorating risk to genuine quality. Records from Archives are also used by CNN for the Anthony Bourdain series: Unknown Parts in Miami, Season 5, episode 3.

The Wolfson Archives currently has the following collections available for online browsing:

  • Collection of the Broward District Historical Commission
  • Collection of Conni Gordon
  • Eastern Airlines Collection
  • House Movie Collection
  • Collection of Miami Dade College
  • Miami Seaquarium Collection
  • Montage Collection
  • WINK TV collections
