Academics

Universities currently provide college-level academic programs for the first two years of a four-year degree program to be completed at a senior college or university. It also provides two-year degree programs, post-secondary career (formerly called "vocational"), secondary education (secondary school), and short-term training and continuing education.

History

The college began as a small agricultural high school in 1917 with 117 students and eight faculty members. In his transformation into a junior college, he began offering college-level academic programs in 1922 and was accredited by the Association of Colleges and Schools of the South in 1926. During World War II years, vocational education curriculum was added to the college offering, and at late 1960s, technical degree programs added.

The branch locations in Jackson and Vicksburg opened in the 1970s. These branches mainly offer secondary school vocational education, although some college night courses are taught. Utica Junior College, a black history college whose history dates from 1903, joined Hinds Junior College in 1982 under a Federal court order as part of a class action racial discrimination suit.

The Pearl-Rankin Culture/Career Center opened in the city of Pearl in 1983, offering secondary vocational education and some college night courses. This branch later became Rankin Campus; now offers academic, technical, and career programs.

Jackson's Campus/Health Care Center opened in Jackson in 1984, offering treatment and other medical and dental programs. This center, along with an existing branch in Jackson, is known as the Jackson Campus. A Resource and Economic Development Coordination Unit (RCU) was added in 1988 at Raymond, and the Eagle Ridge Conference Center was opened in 1996 under the RCU administration. The Vicksburg branch became Vicksburg Campus in 2002 and now offers a college level program.

Hinds Junior College changed its name to Hinds Community College in 1987; that year 13 of 14 other two-year public colleges of Mississippi also adopted the label "community". Hinds was associated with another two-year college through College Community Network (CCN) in 1994. The system allows courses to be offered at one college location while students can participate in courses at several other college locations using video conferencing. All two-year state universities form the Mississippi Virtual Community College (MVCC) in 1999 to offer courses to students via the Internet.
