Recent history and updates

The history of the University of Education Hong Kong (EdUHK) can be traced back to 1853. St. Paul introduced the first formalized in-service teacher training program. This is described in the Annual Report for 1994/95. On April 25, 1994, based on recommendations made by Commission Commission Report No. 5, the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) was formally established by the merger:

  • Northcote College of Education , was founded in 1939 and named after Sir Geoffrey Northcote, former governor of Hong Kong. The college is on 21 Sassoon Road, now the headquarters of the Li Ka Shing Medical School at HKU.
  • Grantham College of Education , was founded in 1951 and named after Sir Alexander Grantham, former governor of Hong Kong. It is located at 42 Gascoigne Road.
  • Sir Robert Black Academy of Education , founded in 1960 and named by Sir Robert Brown Black, former governor of Hong Kong.
  • Hong Kong Technical Teacher School , established in 1974.
  • Institute of Language in Education , established in 1982 and previously under the supervision of the Ministry of Education at the time.

Founded in 1994 on the basis of 70 years of teacher training by former High School of Education, the HKIEd is the only University Grant Committee funded institution dedicated professional teacher education in Hong Kong. HKIEd provides doctoral, master and bachelor degrees, postgraduate diplomas, certificates and in-service programs for approximately 7,000 pre-service students and serving teachers.

In October 1997, the Institute moved to a new campus in Tai Po near Tai Po Industrial Estate. It has a Sports Center in Pak Shek Kok, Tai Po, as well as the Town Center campus in Tseung Kwan O.

In 2001, the Center for Early Child Learning HKIEd HSBC was established on campus. HKIEd Jockey Club Primary School was established on campus the following year.

Since 1 May 2004, the institute has been granted self-accreditation status with respect to its own teacher education program at the undergraduate level and above.

In June 2009, the Institute won an extra annual fund of HK $ 22 million from the Hong Kong Government to provide 120 undergraduate degree places for three new undergraduate programs and 30 research postgraduate places for 2009-2012.

In January 2010, the University Grants Committee supported the HKIEd plan for the Graduate Research program and undergraduate program in three disciplines: "Humanities" (especially Languages), "Social Science", and "Creative & Cultural Arts".

Approval is seen as a step closer for the institution to get its university degree by becoming a complete university education with a variety of disciplines and strong research capacity.

HKIEd will launch the first batch of non-educational programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Language Studies and Bachelor of Social Science in Global and Environmental Studies in September 2010. Both programs have received support from the Hong Kong External Correction Panel of the Academic and Vocational Qualification Accreditation Board.

Preparation for the launch of the third Education-Plus program, Bachelor of Arts in Creative and Cultural Arts, in 2011/2012 is underway.

The Institute operates four institute-level research centers that have been established to facilitate the growth of expertise in multi-disciplinary research.

On September 11, 2015, the Grants University committee accepted an application by the Institute of Education to become a university, and on 26 January 2016 the adoption of the title "University of Education Hong Kong" was approved. Thus, the Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) will be confirmed on February 19, 2016 and introduced to the Legislative Council on March 2, 2016.

In January 2016, the Institute was granted self-accreditation status in three further program areas, covered by existing Area Program Accreditation status: Chinese Studies, English Studies and Environmental Studies.

On May 27, 2016, the Institute was officially renamed the University of Education Hong Kong in recognition of its "efforts and contributions over the years".
