Histori
The origins of the London College of Fashion reside in three early London trading schools for women: the School of Technical Engineering of Girls, founded in 1906; Barrett Street Trade School , founded in 1915; and Clapham Trade School , was established in 1927. All were established by the London City Council's technical education council to train skilled labor for trade including sewing, women's wear, embroidery, sewing and hairdressing; for this, furriery and tailor men are then added. School graduates find good jobs in garment factories in the East End, or in fashion stores and tailor-made skiers in London's West End.
After the Second World War the age of leaving the minimum school is 15; junior-level courses in college were canceled. Barrett Street Trade School became Barrett Street Technical College, and Shoreditch and Clapham schools combined to form Shoreditch College for Garment Trades. Both have college engineering status, and start taking male students as well. In 1967, two colleges were combined to form the London College for Garment Trade. It was renamed the London College of Fashion in 1974.
In 1986, the London College of Fashion became part of the London Institute, formed by the Inner London Education Authority to bring together seven London arts, design, fashion and media schools. The London Institute became a legal entity in 1988, able to provide a teaching degree from 1993, awarded University status in 2003 and renamed the University of the Arts London in 2004.
In August 2000 Cordwainers College , a specialist school for leather work, shoes and upholstery, combined with the London College of Fashion. Founded in Bethnal Green in 1887 as the Leather Trade School. The name was changed to Cordwainers Technical College in about 1914, and then to Cordwainers College in 1991..
