Smoky Night is a 1994 children's book by Eve Bunting. It tells the story of the Los Angeles riot and its aftermath through the eyes of a boy named Daniel. The ongoing fires and looting squads of neighbors who previously disliked each other to work together to find their cat. In the end, cats teach their masters how to get along. It lists the Hundred Centuries of Books Compiled by Staff in School Library Journals. They added the book to the list as a way to the serious picture book genre. Illustrations of David Diaz's collage-like work of the story grabbed the 1995 Caldecott Medal.

Plot
Riots and uproar occurred around Los Angeles, where Daniel and his mother lived. Families are forced to leave their apartments when the building is on fire. After all racism and judgment takes place and does not associate with their neighbors, they must unite and put aside their differences. In that upheaval, their cat and neighbor's cat are gone. Once they get to the shelter where they live, a fireman carries their cat, who has been tied to their experience.
