The main campus is located on a 1,022 hectare (414 ha) site near Isla Vista, California, United States, 8 miles (13 km) from Santa Barbara and 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Los Angeles. Tracing its roots back to 1891 as an independent teacher's college, UCSB merged with the University of California system in 1944 and is the third oldest public education campus in the system.

UCSB is one of the American Ivy Public universities, which recognizes a leading public research university in the United States. The university is a comprehensive doctoral university and is organized into five colleges and schools offering 87 undergraduate and 55 undergraduate degrees. UCSB is ranked 37th among "National Universities", eighth among US state universities and 24 among the Best Global Universities by US. News & amp; World Report Rank 2016. The university is also ranked 48th in the world for 2016-17 by World University Rankings of Education Times and ranked 45th in the world by Academic Ranking of the World University on year 2017.

Histori

UCSB traces its origins back to Anna Blake School which was founded in 1891 and offers training in household economics and industrial arts. The school of Anna Blake was taken over by the state in 1909 and became the Normal School of Santa Barbara State , which later became Santa Barbara State College in 1921. In 1944 the lobby was intense by groups interests in the City of Santa Barbara led by Thomas Storke and Pearl Chase persuaded the State Legislature, Governor Earl Warren, and the University of California Bureau to relocate State College to a more research-oriented University of California system. The State College system sued to stop the takeover, but the Governor did not support the lawsuit. However, the state initiative was passed in 1946 to stop the next State College conversion to the University of California campus. From 1944 to 1958 the school was known as California's Santa Barbara College of the University , before taking the current name. When a training station for the Marine Corps vacated at Goleta was purchased for a rapidly growing campus, Santa Barbara City College moved into empty State College buildings.

Initially, the Regents envisioned a small liberal arts college, several thousand students, called "Williams College of the West", in Santa Barbara. Chronologically, UCSB is the third major public education campus of the University of California, after Berkeley and UCLA (the only other state campus that has been acquired by the UC system). The original campus acquired by the Regent in Santa Barbara is located on 100 hectares of land (40 ha) which is largely unusable on the beach mesa. The availability of a 400-hectare (160-hectare) plot of land used as the Santa Barbara Marine Corps Air Station until 1946 at other seaside waters in Goleta, available to Regents for free from the federal government, led to the site becoming the Santa Barbara Campus in 1949. Initially, only 3000-3500 students were anticipated, but the post-World War II boom led to the appointment of the public campus in 1958, along with the change of name from "Santa Barbara College" to "University of California, Santa Barbara," and the cessation of an industrial arts program in which state colleges are famous. A Chancellor, Samuel B. Gould, was appointed in 1959. All these changes were made in accordance with the Master Plan for Higher Education of California.

In 1959 UCSB professor Douwe Stuurman hosted the English writer Aldous Huxley as the first guest professor at the university. Huxley delivered a series of lectures called "The Human Situation".

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, UCSB became nationally recognized as a hotbed of anti-Vietnam War activity. A bombing at the school faculty club in 1969 killed a guard, Dover Sharp. In the spring of 1970 there were several burnings, including the burning of Bank of America branches in the Isla Vista student community, during which time a male student, Kevin Moran, was shot and killed by police. UCSB's anti-Vietnamese activities prompted then Governor Ronald Reagan to impose a curfew and ordered the National Guard to enforce it. Armed guards are a common sight on campus and on Isla Vista during this time.

In 1995, UCSB was elected to the Association of American Universities, a leading research university organization, with membership of 59 universities in the United States (both public and private) and two Canadian universities.

On May 23, 2014, a mass murder took place in Isla Vista, California, a community near the campus. The six people killed in the rampage were the students at UCSB. The killer is a former Santa Barbara City College student living in Isla Vista.

Campus

UCSB is located on a cliff just above the Pacific Ocean. The UCSB campus is completely autonomous from the local government and has not been annexed by the city of Santa Barbara and is thus not part of the city. Despite looking closer to the newly formed Goleta town, a Santa Barbara plot that forms the "city" strip through the ocean to Santa Barbara airport, runs through the western entrance to the university campus. Although UCSB has a Santa Barbara mailing address, as do other unrelated areas around the city, only this incoming packet is in the city limits of Santa Barbara. The campus is divided into four sections: the Main Campus (East) of 708 hectares (287 ha) which houses all academic units plus the majority of undergraduate housing, Storke Campus, Western Campus and Northern Campus. The campuses surround the community without permission from Isla Vista.

UCSB is one of the few universities in the United States with its own beach. The campus, which is bordered by two sides by the Pacific Ocean, has miles of coastline, its own lagoon, and rocky extensions, Goleta Point, also known as "Campus Point". The campus has many walking paths and bikes across campus, around the lagoon and along the coast. It owns and manages the Nature Coal Point preserve on the Western Campus.

Most of the early architecture of the campus was designed by renowned architect William Pereira and his partner Charles Luckman, and made heavy use of custom-colored and custom-colored blocks. This design element was brought to many of the next school buildings.

The lagoon is a large water body adjacent to the coastline, between San Rafael and San Miguel Residence Halls. It was created from the former tidal salt marsh and fed with a combination of running water and seawater used by Marine Life Building water tanks; thus, this is a unique combination of freshwater and saltwater. Many of the older campus buildings were replaced with newer, more modern facilities. The UCSB Library, which consists of Davidson Library and Art Library, stores over 3 million volumes and millions of microforms, government documents, manuscripts, maps, satellites and aerial photographs, sound recordings, and other materials. Located in the center of the campus, UCSB Library will make a breakthrough on significant upgrade and renovation projects in June 2013.

Campbell Hall is the university's largest lecture hall with 862 seats. It is also home to the UCSB Arts and Lectures series, which features special performances, movies and lectures for the UCSB campus and the Santa Barbara community.

Storke Tower, completed in 1969, is the tallest building in Santa Barbara County. It can be seen from most places on campus, and overlooks Storke Plaza. It is home to five-octave, 61-bell carillon. KCSB 91.9 and Nexus Daily have headquarters under the Storke Tower.

The UCSB Family Vacation Center founded in 1969, is a summer family camp located on campus that attracts over 2,000 guests each summer. Over 50 staff including many UCSB students have been trained extensively as camp counselors.

Layout

The University (itself called the University of California campus) is divided into two physical campuses, the Western Campus and the Eastern Campus. Most university facilities, including all lecture halls and laboratories, are on the Eastern Campus. Both campuses are connected to a large track (known as the Northern Campus and Storke) to the north of the university housing and athletic field. Thus, the university surrounds Isla Vista on three sides. The Western Campus, apart from several buildings dedicated to faculty housing, has largely been leased to private organizations, and includes schools for the disabled (part of the Devereux Foundation) and a large nature reserve, Coal Oil Reserves. The largest sand dune on the southern coast of Santa Barbara Channel is located here.

The Eastern campus is centered around two quadrangles, separated from each other by the main library and bus circle, and the building of life sciences. On the eastern side of the Campus, Davidson Library was recently renovated. Library Development is completed November 2015 and opened for schools in January 2016. Along the western square there is the Storke Plaza and residential buildings of various arts, social sciences, and humanities departments. Student Resource Building and Event Center are also located along this quad. Surrounding the eastern wider square like the park are the buildings that accommodate the department of physics and High School of Engineering. Directly to the south, but not adjacent to, eastern quad is the life science and psychology department, as well as most of the housing on campus. The southern part of the campus is dominated by the lagoon. The peninsula that stretches from shore to lagoon contains labyrinths.

Bicycle

UCSB is known for its extensive cycling system. A recent survey says that 53 percent of UCSB students travel by bicycle. Bicycles have exclusive rights in a series of specially designed lanes throughout the Eastern Campus. Bicycle stands and lockers are everywhere. UCSB is unique among bicycle-heavy areas in most trips carried out within a small radius.

Student activities and traditions

Social

UCSB is a politically active campus. For the 2008 presidential election, UCSB won a national college competition for voter registration by enrolling 10857 voters, or 51.5% of the student population. Over the years, many political parties and organizations are known to be active on campus, such as Republicans, Campus Democrats, Green Party, Libertarians, NORMLs, and the Queer Student Union.

There are various campus centers that offer social, recreational, religious, and pre-profiling activities for students. The UCSB Multicultural Center places various activities each year to support color students and promote awareness of diversity issues on campus. Other organizations and centers include Nexus Daily , daily newspapers, La Cumbre Yearbook, school radio stations, KCSB 91.9, , weekly newspapers, and Gaucho Free Press, campus conservative magazine. UCSB Recreation Center also organizes activities, from Adventure Programs to Ballroom dance classes. Furthermore, UCSB Hillel offers space for the large Jewish population of UCSB and a place for Jewish students to gather in a unique building on Isla Vista. Students socialize in Arbor, UCen, Coral Tree Cafe at the Courtyard Cafe and for a special lunch, Faculty Club.

UCSB is also known for its free annual music festival, Extravaganza. It was held at Harder Stadium in the spring and generally attracted about 8,000 people. Past appearances have included Nas, T.I., E-40, Sublime, Run-D.M.C., Pharcyde, Social Distortions, Jack Johnson, Drake and Snoop Dogg among many others.

Bab Nu of Phrateres, a non-exclusive, non-profit social service club, was installed here in 1939. Between 1924 and 1967, 23 chapters of Phratere were installed in universities throughout North America.

Housing

There are eight hostels in UCSB, seven of which are located on the main campus. One, Santa Catalina, is located near the entrance to the West Campus to the north of Isla Vista.

Santa Catalina has its own dining area, Portola Dining Commons, as well as a heated swimming pool, two lounges, plenty of study space, two recreation rooms, a fitness center and tennis courts and a large lawn. Since Santa Catalina is nearly 1 million (1.6 km) off-campus, it has its own campus police station as well as a residential office and a Res-Net support center.

Campus Campus main hall is found in two different locations. At the eastern end of the campus there is a residence hall named after the five Channel islands: Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, San Miguel, and San Nicolas. There are two public eating places located near the residence hall on the Channel Islands. Ortega Dining Commons is located between San Miguel and the University Center (UCen), and De La Guerra Dining Commons (DLG) is located between Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz and San Nicolas.

The other two residence halls, San Rafael and Manzanita Village, are located on the west side of the campus and especially homes that continue and transfer students. The Carrillo Dining Commons is located in Manzanita Village, right next to San Rafael Hall. Manzanita village was completed in 2002, and is the newest hostel on campus.

In addition, the university also has four residential complexes for graduate students and their families: San Clemente Village for single graduate students, Santa Ynez Apartments, El Dorado Apartments, Westgate Apartments, and student student housing: West Campus Apartments and Storke Apartment complex. There is also a Faculty of Housing at the Point of the Western Campus and a new construction takes place on the Northern Campus. The Sierra Madre Villages, located in West Campus Apartments, was completed in September 2015 and is the first residential complex to be certified as LEED platinum throughout the UC system. UC Santa Barbara is the only campus on the UC system with LEED for Homes certification.

Private dormitory rooms are also available for UCSB students. Tropicana Del Norte, located right next to Campus Utama, accommodates UCSB students in 51 suites and has an on-site dining and heated pool.

Students may also choose to rent housing in communities adjacent to Isla Vista. The average estimate for the rental fee is US $ 500- $ 800/month to share a bedroom, and includes picking up trash and water utilities. Inexpensive housing is limited, with the cheapest source is the Student Housing Cooperative Santa Barbara.

Other residential sources include the Greek System, and remote communities (ie Goleta, Santa Barbara, Isla Vista, Montecito). Some students live on Isla Vista, which is directly adjacent to the campus. Isla Vista since the early 1960s has a reputation as a party environment. UCSB is also affiliated with the Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative on Isla Vista, which seeks to provide low rent housing regardless of gender, race, social, political or religious, and thereby influence people to eliminate prejudice and discrimination in the Community.

Services

There are a number of academic sources offered by universities, including writing centers, open computer labs, machine shops, career and counseling centers, and academic advising drop-ins.

The large leisure center provides classes and facilities for students and faculty. The center has a swimming pool, racquetball court, stone walls and an exercise machine. The University Center has facilities for meetings and presentations, and also contains bookstores, restaurants and cashiers.

UCSB has a health clinic. Students with illness or seeking medical help can consult a doctor at the clinic. The clinic also offers basic health care and provides emergency medicines and contraceptives. The University is the only UC campus with its own Paramedical Rescue Unit. It is administered by full-time professional paramedics and part-time EMT scholars.

SexInfo, started in 1976 by Professors John and Janice Baldwin, is run by students doing advanced course work and research on sexuality through the UCSB Sociology Department. This site is dedicated to providing accurate information about sexuality in an informative and personal way. SexInfo answers questions sent by readers from around the world, as well as regularly updating and posting articles on various topics related to human sexuality. This program helps students gain a degree in psychology.

Athletics

UCSB mascot is Gaucho and blue and gold school colors. UCSB sports teams compete in the Big West Conference, with the exception of male water polo, men's and women's pools, and men's volleyball teams, located in the Pacific Sports Federation of Mt. Santa Barbara is famous for men's pool and men's soccer team. In 2006, UCSB won their first NCAA Men's Soccer title and the second overall NCAA championship (1979 water polo) in school history.

Although there are about 400 students in the ICA, there are over 700 members in the Club Sports Team including: Alpine Racing, Cycling, Fencing, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Hockey Roller, Rugby, Sailing, Football, Triathlon, Frisbee Ultimate, Water Skiing and Rowing. Many of these teams are highly respected and compete with college teams from all over the US. For example, Rowing has produced several national team members including Nine-time National Rowing member Amy Fuller, winners of several Olympic and World Championships medals and currently head of the UCLA Rowing Program. The UCSB Cycling Team has also produced several members of the national team, the Olympian, and members of many US and international professional teams.

Many hundreds of other students participate in a large Intramural program consisting of Badminton, Basketball, Bowling, Soccer Flag, Golf, Hockey Floor, Indoor and Outdoor, Racquetball, Squash, Running, Softball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Frisbee Ultimate, Volleyball, Ban water in the tube, and Kickball.

Surfing also attracts many students to UCSB. The beaches on campus include a number of decent surfing sites, including "Poles," "Campus Point," "Depression" and "Sand" and "Devereaux Point" on the west campus. Since Campus Beach is actually facing South and East, and is protected by the Santa Barbara Islands Channel, the waves are usually quite small. However, the big waves of North or West can wrap to create big waves that are usually very clean and great for surfing. UCSB has a surf team that competes in the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) competition, and is generally regarded as one of the best in the country. They continued their reputation by winning the 14th national title at the college level in 2010.
