The Old Dominion Athletic Conference ( ODAC ) is an athletic conference of the NCAA Division III. Of the 14 member schools, all but one are located in Virginia; other full members in North Carolina. The conference also has three associate members in Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia

History
The conference was founded in 1975 as the Virginia College Conference . On January 1, 1976, the name was changed to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The 1976-77 season was the first in which the championship was offered. In 1982-1983, women's sports were added. In 1981, the Catholic University joined the conference after leaving the Association of Athletics Division I. In 1988, Virginia Wesleyan was added as a member, and, in 1990, Guilford became the first member to be located outside D.C. and Virginia. Maryville College was a member of all sports in the 1980s. In 1989, the Catholic left the conference to become a charter member of the Athletic Capital Conference, back in 1999 as a soccer-only member. The next school to leave the conference is Mary Baldwin College, left in 1999 to join the Atlantic Women's Conference.
In 2010 ODAC announced the addition of Shenandoah University to full-time membership, with the first year of full engagement during the 2012-13 academic year.
The league office moved its physical location from Salem, Virginia, to Forest, Virginia, just outside of central Lynchburg, and contracted with Jim Ward Design for his new grade.
On March 3, 2015, Sweet Briar College announced it would close (stop operating) at the end of the 2015 summer session. However, on 20 June 2015, the Attorney General of Virginia announced a mediation agreement that will make Sweet Briar College open for the 2015-16 school year. Sweet Briar reactivates its sports team in the 2015-16 season and remains a full member of ODAC.
On September 29, 2015, it was announced that the Catholic University would resign in 2017 as an associate member to join the new football league at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.
The conference hosts the 3rd Division Championships in men's soccer and basketball, both held in Salem, Virginia. Softball DIII has called Salem home along with lacrosse and women's volley of the Third Division. Since 1993 - conferences and cities have hosted more than 50 national championships of the Third Division.
