Collagen disease is a term previously used to describe systemic autoimmune diseases (eg, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and systemic sclerosis), but is now considered more appropriate for diseases associated with defects in collagen, which are components of connective tissue.
The term "collagen disease" was created by Dr. Alvin F. Coburn in 1932, in his quest to find a streptococcal infection as a cause of rheumatic fever.
